Ollie the Lightning Cloud

UIUX Design

Overview

Lightning—we’ve all heard its thunderous clap and seen its blinding flash, but have you ever wondered how it works? Ollie the Lightning Cloud involved crafting a compelling narrative structure, coding on-screen interactions, and designing animations that respond to touch and movement. These interactions, paired with a toy cloud, invite children to shake, rub, and play to see lightning in action.

Approach

Learning about the science behind lightning and cloud formation can be exciting, but making it engaging for children is a different challenge. To tackle this, we decided to go with a phygital story telling approach, creating an interactive storybook featuring Ollie, a playful lightning cloud, to teach kids about lightning in a fun and easy-to-understand way. We collaborated with professors, scientists, and creative experts from the Science Center to bring this idea to life. After 11 weeks of prototyping, coding, storyboarding and animating, we developed a digital storybook that helps young learners explore and understand lightning through interactive storytelling.
